Casey, thanks for the equine education this semester. I really enjoyed your citizen journalism initiative. You picked topics for your posts that would interest even non-equine people, and presented your information in a compelling, readable way.

One reason for your success was that you stayed focussed on an identifiable community of interest -- one that I'm sure could be nurtured and drawn to your site on an ongoing basis, should you decide to keep it going (which I hope you'll consider).

Congratulations on a great effort.

Average racehorse heart size is 8 1/2lbs.

Not sure about proportionately if human have larger hearts, but it has been shown that human athletes can gain larger hearts with training. Seven-time Olympic champion runner Paavo Nurmi's heart was three time larger than an average person's when x-rayed. This has been found with many marathoners but is seen when they are in peak condition. With horses, the heart size measured at time of autopsy usually is not one of a horse in training, but a horse who has had a breeding career and has been out of training for many years, so the link is more genetic in the horse than human.

Casey, how much does the average horse's heart weight?

And proportionately, do humans have bigger hearts than horses?

I like the timeliness of this post, Casey. Pegging a story to a season, a milestone or an anniversary is a classic journalistic strategy. Good to see it works in citizen journalism as well as conventional journalism.

You're always so careful to explain things way beyond the industry's needs. THANKS! It probably goes without saying that once again, you have educated me. I had no idea people called bloodstock agents existed. But like warmbloods, I won't soon forget them.

This blog entry has certainly been yet another learning experience for me, Casey. But from a communications perspective, "dummy" is such an unfortunate moniker for these poor animals!

Maybe we can have a contest in class to rename them.

This is not to make light of a serious situation. Working to save a "dummy" foal sounds like a noble pursuit. Shouldn't the subject of all this work have a name that better reflects its earthly contributions?
